Welcome back, listeners. Today we look at the Lockerbie bombing of 1988, where a bomb in a luggage compartment downed a PanAm flight and killed 270 people in all, including 190 Americans. Allegedly, supposedly, maybe the US has arrested and charged the Libyan bomb-maker that brought down the plane. But this case is not that simple, and might actually be steeped in Imperial global politics.
Unlike most acts of mass terrorism, where a group or person takes credit for the act (because, well, that was the point) there are two completely different narratives that both have evidence behind them. One, the current theory of the crime of the US government, is that the bomb was planted by Libyan intelligence, with islamo-socialist super-villain Muammar Gaddafi rubbing his palms in the background.
The other is that it was planted by Palestinian splinter group PFLP-GC on a cash commission from the government of Iran in revenge for the US destroying an Iranian airliner; and that the bomb with the bomb built by none other than a bona-fide US asset. We go through the many layers of sometimes conflicting evidence of all kinds — informant testimony, physical remains, the logistics of baggage claims — to try to get to the bottom of it.
