Anita Powell is employed as a Community Engagement Advocate. With an interest in social issues and injustices, she has volunteered, worked and been an activist covering social inequality, heritage and menopause. She has worked on mental health issues, with ex-offenders, with people who are unemployed, on the menopause, and on refugee issues. She has been a menopause activist since 2019, founding the Menopause Alliance which holds a face-to-face peer support group in her hometown of Bedford where she grew up with her Afro-Caribbean family.
Anita hosts the podcast Black Menopause and Beyond which covers the topic of menopause and consists of interviews and reflections. Her reflections are made up of her lived experience, the experience of her peers and her professional experience working in the community sector.
In 2020 Anita became the Co-founder of Black Women in Menopause with Nina Kuyper, offering face-to-face online meetings via Zoom every two months. She is also a speaker on menopause, community, ethnic minorities, and women's issues and has appeared on BBC Breakfast, the Guardian, Magic FM radio, Maria Claire Magazine, Stylist and more.
