The Matrix franchise is inspired by several anime, such as Ghost in the Shell, and as we'll see in a later episode, Dragon Ball Z. So, instead of shying away from it, the Wachowskis and Warner Bros. decided to do something completely unprecedented to celebrate the releases of Reloaded and Revolutions: contracting multiple anime studios to produce nine short films all set in the Matrix universe.
