Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) is determined to advance his career in publishing, even if it means paying his dues as the overworked and under-appreciated assistant to Margaret Tate, a.k.a “Satan’s Mistress” (Sandra Bullock). When Margaret realizes she’s about to be deported back to Canada, she and Andrew embark on a risky scheme: he’ll pose as her fiancé and she’ll give him the promotion he’s been working for.
Trouble ensues when a dubious immigration officer gives them an ultimatum: prove that they are a real couple or face serious legal consequences. With the deadline looming, Margaret joins Andrew on a family visit to Alaska and the lines between their real and pretend relationships begin to blur.
