While some people are aware of the "mild" reforming movements, most are not aware of the early radical Protestants that swept across Europe, leading to the desecration and destruction of icons, looting of churches in general, abolition of masses, attacks on processions. If you want to understand the Catholic Churches initial responses to the reformers, you must not isolate the early events from the later.
