In this week’s episode, John and Bryan talk with VanDyk Rookie Loan Originator Sean Carter, who within six months of joining the industry, sold $2 million in volume.
After spending 30 years in the automotive industry – 22 ½ of those years spent in automotive financing – Sean explains that he was ready for a new challenge when he made the decision to leave his job and his home in Michigan and move to Ft. Myers, FL.
After having a poor mortgage loan experience, Sean was introduced to one of VanDyk’s Top Producing Loan Originators, Tim Hart to step in and help. Tim showed Sean that this process didn’t have to be difficult, in fact, it could be enjoyable. And this is when Sean knew where his next career move would be.
Sean joined the mortgage industry in October 2020, with Tim as his mentor. With thoughtful guidance and support, Tim mentored Sean in every way. This is one of his secrets to success – get a mentor who cares about your success, as if it were their own. One willing to put the time and energy into each one of their proteges.
Bryan asks Sean what his other secrets were to building relationships in a state, and in an industry, where he knew next to no one. Sean explains that by attending in-person broker opens and open houses during the weekends, he was able to build important relationships and generate valuable leads. Sean goes on to explain that he attributes 3/4’s of his database to attending these open houses.
Sean shares that in addition to taking the time to build relationships by attending these events, he also made sure to follow up with each new connection through a simple text and contact card. He also explains that he provides market updates to his database and encourages open communication – letting his clients know that he is always available to help them with any mortgage loan needs they may have.
Lastly, Sean shares that he believes that having a mentor and a strong supportive team is the key to his success. To him, it was “the difference between sinking or swimming.” And even though he had many years of sales and financing, the mortgage industry is a different beast. One where mentorship is necessary.
