Ep. #38 How To Leave A Cult with Brooke Walker
In this episode, we talk to Brooke Walker, a former member of the Church of Immortal Consciousness, a cult she was brought into at the age of 8. Led by Trina Camp and her husband Steven, the group fostered a tight-knit community with arranged marriages and a belief in reincarnation. Brooke recounts her experience growing up in this oppressive environment, where emotional and occasional physical abuse were common. Children were expected to surpass their parents and learn from their mistakes, with gratitude for the “opportunity” to do so.
At 17, Brooke was forced into an arranged marriage, and by 22, her husband left the group, leaving her to raise two children within the cult’s controlling structure. The church didn’t have a physical building and instead focused on emotionally manipulative practices like "breaking down your brackets," involving yelling and emotional manipulation. The leaders used their supposed spiritual powers to exploit members, keeping them in fear of eternal damnation if they left.
Now, Brooke shares her journey of healing and resilience through her podcast, "How to Leave a Cult," where she helps others navigate deconstruction. Her advice is to ask the right questions, build healthy relationships, and take small steps toward healing without overwhelming yourself.
