Jesus Laments over Jerusalem
Matthew 23:37-39
The lament is definitely to show that the prophecy of Jesus was not given in a spirit of vindictiveness. His lament over Jerusalem frames the laments of "woe" in love. In lamenting the faithlessness of His countrymen in not reaching their destiny, He transfers their rejection of the prophets to Himself. He wept over Jerusalem; He would have gathered them like a hen gathers chicks under her wings. He no doubt was recalling . "Isaiah 31:5As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it”
But you were not willing" is a sad statement of judgment given at the very time that Jesus was leaving the temple.
