Matthew's Gospel begins with one tree and (very nearly) ends with another. He starts with Jesus' family tree, proving that Jesus is the Son of David and the Son of Abraham, and so is qualified to fulfil the promises God made his people concerning their Messiah. Remarkably, however, this Chosen One, a perfect King, chose to go and die on a tree, the cross of Calvary, to save his people from their sins.
