Still needing assurance, Abram receives the most dramatic and solemn promise from God concerning his future: God makes a covenant with Abram, even taking on Himself the pain of death should the covenant not be kept. In this crucially important passage, one writer says we cannot help but see the "nail-scarred hands of our covenant-keeping God".
