Briefing: Seth on Matter, Growth, and Getting an 'A'
Alright folks, settle in for a wild ride. We're diving into Session 71 of The Early Sessions Book 2 of the Seth Material, recorded way back on July 15, 1964. This session is a real mind-bender where Seth basically tells us that everything we think we know about growth is, well, hilariously wrong.
Constructions: Primary vs. Secondary
Seth kicks things off by explaining how we build our reality. He breaks it down into two main categories:
Consciousness: You're More Than Just Your Brain-Chatter
To understand this, Seth gives a killer analogy. Your total consciousness is like an "almost infinite light." The part you use every day—your ego—is just one focused beam, like the low beams on a car. You wouldn't use high beams in city traffic; likewise, the whole self only uses the "beam" of consciousness necessary for the situation. Using the full wattage would be totally distracting.
The Big Illusion: Nothing Actually "Grows"
Here's where it gets really chilling. Seth states emphatically that matter does not grow.
"Seed does not grow into grass. Acorns do not grow into trees. Children do not grow into adults... Matter does not grow. I cannot make this too plain."
The reason? The matter that makes up a blade of grass is completely different from the matter that made up the seed. The atoms and molecules are in a constant state of flux, appearing and disappearing almost instantly. The continuity you perceive isn't in the matter; it's in the consciousness projecting the form. What we call "growth" is actually a process Seth calls value fulfillment—the immaterial consciousness getting better at expressing itself in the physical world.
The End of "Book One"
This session was a big one. Seth declares it the end of the "preliminary lessons" of their course, the foundational material for any deep understanding. He was so pleased with Jane and Rob's progress that he gave them a report card. The grade? An "A"! He congratulates them on completing the "beginner’s manual" and humorously promises to help prepare their new house energetically, though he draws the line at physical chores: "I refuse to do Ruburt’s cleaning for him."
