The Grand Illusion of Closed Systems

Seth opens with a foundational statement: "No system is a closed system. The framework of all systems is basically infinite." He argues that any appearance of boundaries or enclosures is merely a "camouflage distortion." These distortions are necessary fictions that allow organisms (like us) to focus on the specific challenges of their immediate reality without being overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of infinity.

"A closed system is, in other words, the result of the limitations of the outword senses, whose nature it is to distinguish as a meaningful reality only one portion of an open infinite system."

This limited perception leads to the misconception that all energy originates from within our system, coloring all scientific deductions about the nature of energy itself. Seth insists that from the microscopic to the cosmic, no closed system truly exists.

The Real Deal: Mental Energy and Inner Senses

The fabric of reality, Seth explains, is not physical but mental. The universe is composed of "mental energy, expanding in terms of psychological value fulfillment." In such a reality, the concept of a closed system is unworkable because mental energy, like an idea, is inherently expansive and unlimited.

He points out that our inner senses, unlike our outer ones, are perfectly aware of the infinite, open system in which they operate. As individuals grow, they learn to rely heavily on the outer senses for practical reasons, gradually losing touch with the inner senses that were dominant in infancy.

Seth provides clear, practical advice centered on breaking free from the ego's tight grip and the limitations it imposes.

1. Embrace Sensual Immersion: Too much conscious effort reinforces the very boundaries one is trying to pass. The solution is an "emotional acceptance" and a "sensual immersion in the spacious present and in nature." Activities like walking in the rain, lying in the grass, or getting lost in creative work (becoming the poem or the painting) allow the personality to momentarily drop the "props of identity."
2. Focus on the Goal, Not the Means: Consciously focusing on the barriers only strengthens them. Seth advises to "concentrate upon the goal rather than the means of attaining it, and you will attain it." The most profound psychic experiences will appear to be spontaneous.
3. Leverage the Subconscious: Before engaging in periods of immersion or contemplation, one should state their purpose to the subconscious and then consciously forget it. This avoids the negative feedback loop of doubt and anxiety that conscious focus can create. The subconscious, freed from conscious interference, will then acquire the desired inspiration.
4. Break Routine: Traveling, changing environments, or even taking long walks through unfamiliar parts of town helps facilitate psychic transformations by disrupting the familiar "props" that reinforce a limited identity.
