He says, "Like the fossilized layers within the physical earth, so do the subconscious layers hold intact the traces of an individual’s past lives." 1. The Topsoil: This is the surface level, holding your "almost conscious just-under-the-surface needs and desires." Think of it as the daily drama department.
2. The Quake Zone: Just below that, you'll find the stuff you're really scared of. Seth says these elements can "arise as in an earthquake, to shatter the seemingly solid surface of the ego." Yikes.

The Rise of Secondary Personalities

Ever feel like you're not yourself? Maybe you're not! Seth explains that a big psychic "earthquake" can cause a secondary personality to boil up from that third layer. These entities can be benevolent, giving you an outlet for buried creative talents, or they can be trouble, personifying your deepest fears.

And in a classic, amusing aside, Seth clarifies his own position: "I do not represent such a secondary personality. However I have included this material for your edification when you suppose that I am."

Digging Deeper: Between and Before

Beneath your personal baggage lies the really juicy stuff:

• The Undifferentiated Fields: These are the gaps between lives. Seth says this is the "focus point" where "communication between what is termed the living and the dead may take place."
