The Cosmic Tuning Fork
Seth kicks things off by explaining how these sessions actually work. It’s not just Jane (whom Seth calls Ruburt) talking in her sleep; it’s a high-level collaboration between different dimensions.
- Seth explains that a "fine-tuning of focus" is happening, pushing Ruburt’s abilities into directions that the normal ego finds totally alien.
- It’s a synthesis. Seth says, "A focusing is involved on my part also, and a kind of synthesis formed that allows us to bridge the gap that separates our fields of action."
- Even though this feels like a workout for the personality, it’s mostly happening in the deep unconscious layers. You can’t just "will" this to happen with your conscious mind; you have to let the unconscious principles take the wheel.
Validation and Psychic Hits
Robert (Joseph) wanted to fact-check some of Seth’s previous predictions, and Seth was ready to play ball.
- Remember Peggy Gallagher? She missed a session because of "urgent" business. Seth had previously mentioned a "disturbance" at 3 o'clock that changed her plans. While the day was slightly off, the "disturbance" at her newspaper office was real and resulted in a staff suspension.
- Jane’s poetry book? Seth doubles down: "The poetry book will indeed sell."
- Landlord drama? Seth confirms his previous hits regarding the landlord’s tax troubles and potential health issues (tumors and abdominal issues) were legitimate, though "probabilities" are always in play.
The Science of "Inner Data"
This is where it gets a bit "chilling" but brilliant. Seth explains how we perceive reality.
- Our bodies act on subconscious knowledge all the time. To get that info to our conscious brain, it has to be translated into "sense data"—like a sight, sound, or feeling.
- Seth notes: "Sense data therefore may be the result of perception of outer and inner environment."
- Inner data is harder to translate because it doesn’t have the "illusion of continuity" that the physical world has. It’s fleeting and symbolic, much like a dream.
The 42nd Envelope Experiment
Joseph handed a sealed envelope to Jane while she was in trance. Inside was an insurance receipt for a tape sent to Dr. Instream. Seth’s "net of awareness" caught some wild details:
- He picked up on the number nine, a "miscellany of shapes," and a "round bright object" (which turned out to be a circular handstamp).
- He mentioned "Elmira, NY" and "Water Street"—both dead-on for the location and mailing details.
- He even sensed "four heads," likely referring to the four people present when the original tape was recorded.
The Subconscious Health Bargain
Finally, Seth gets personal with Joseph about his health. He reveals that Joseph had a "subconscious bargain" with a virus.
- Joseph used to get sick every winter. Seth explains: "The subconscious bargain was this: For relative freedom the rest of the year, you settled for a virus that would hit you any time between January and March 20."
- Seth also drops a bombshell: Joseph’s mother gave him a "negative suggestion" about the polio vaccine years prior, which Joseph’s mind actually triggered into a physical reaction. Talk about the power of the mind!
