There is, of course, much dross, much frailty in our institutions, much to be repented of, but we also see in this image Julian gives the way that the church is like Noah’s ark, somehow adrift in the sea of destruction and sin, imperfect but sustained by God, protected as a beacon of God’s presence and a symbol of God’s great love.
