In 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment granted a woman the fundamental right to privacy, which included her right to an abortion. On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, stating that the right to an abortion was not inherent to the due process clause. Christian reactions to Dobbs have been mixed, and to help us bring some clarity and historic context to the discussion, I sat down with Keith Stanglin of the Center for Christian Studies based in Austin, TX. Dr. Stanglin is a church historian and ethicist, and has recently published a very accessible and engaging book entitled Ethics Beyond Rules: How Christ’s Call to Love Informs Our Moral Choices (Zondervan, 2021) in which he offers a compelling #Christian perspective on #abortion. I greatly appreciated his insight and pastoral approach to this difficult and divisive topic.
