Can it be 2023? We hope, Dear Listeners, that you rang in the New Year with much joy and festivity! Shall we celebrate with part two of Emily's recording with the wonderful Audrey and Laurel of Sapphic Culture Club? In this episode we discuss (you guessed it) Céline Sciamma and Adèle Haenel once more!
Our topic this time is Céline's first feature, the 2007 coming-of-age drama Water Lilies (French title: Naissance des Pieuvres, or The Birth of Octopuses). In this sensitive and impactful portrait of youthful love and desire, we follow teenaged protagonist Marie (Pauline Acquart) as she meets and falls in love with the beautiful and elusive Floriane (Adèle Haenel), a synchronized swimmer. This film has many of the hallmarks we've come to admire Celine for, and terrific performances from the three female leads. We hope you enjoy!
