Each career in music is as unique as each person in the field, but we will all experience highs and lows. The key is to stay in the game. I find myself saying this to students frequently: "Whoever stays in the game the longest wins." Like a kid harping "nah nah nah nah boo boo" in that minor third interval, whoever stays in the game the longest implies that there are winners and losers in this thing. And there are. But not in the sports kind of way. Staying in the game means you stay active on the scene, you continue to put out work, you continue to seek greatness through practice and self evaluation. Staying in the game allows your contemporaries time to build their own careers, providing you future opportunities for collaboration.
Staying in the game is the hard part. Practicing is fun when the fire is lit! So this begs the question: How do I keep the fire lit? How do I fall in love with music again?"
