Description

Jesus asks Peter three times, "Do you love me?" and each time, Peter says "Yes." By the time Jesus asks Peter a third time, Peter is hurt by the question. Why does Jesus keep asking the same question? As we may suspect, Jesus desires not to hurt Peter but to heal him, and to invite us to be healed as well.

For Reflection:

Imagine yourself in Peter's place.

- Jesus first asked Peter, "Do you love me more than these?" If you were Peter in this situation, what might Jesus be asking you? Do you love Jesus more than these ________ (fill in the blank). What might be in that blank space?

- By asking three times, Jesus is perhaps inviting Peter to redo or undo three bad decisions (his three denials) – to get it right this time. What is a something that Jesus might invite you to get right this time? What lesson might he want you to learn from your past?
