Description

Jesus declares that he is the good shepherd. Unlike hired hands who may run when danger arrives, Jesus is ready to lay down his life for the sheep, for us. No one compels him; Jesus chose this! As we follow Jesus's example, it is important that we also take care of ourselves. "Self-care" is a constant refrain today but self-care must have the goal of sustaining us in the work of laying down our lives for those in our care, or else we risk becoming the hired hands that Jesus warns against.

For Reflection:

Jesus is the good shepherd who lays his life down for the sheep. No one compels him; he chooses this!

- What does it mean to you to know that Jesus willingly chooses to lay down his life for you? How might Jesus' choice affect how you see God, others, and yourself?

- In order to lay down our lives over a lifetime (rather than just for an instant), there is a need to take care of ourselves. How do you find that balance between sacrifice and self-care? What might you need to do or change to live more lovingly and sustainably?
