Even relatively minor pains that lack purpose and predictability can cause intense suffering -- chronic headaches, for instance. In contrast, much greater pains can actually lead to joy. Jesus uses the example of childbirth. Thought very intense, it is only for a time and it leads to something wonderful! In the same way, Jesus wants his disciples to know that their pain will end and lead to even greater joy.

For Reflection:
Like childbirth, Jesus tells his disciples that there is purpose and predictability in their pain. Their pain will end and something better awaits them on the other side.
- How might keeping these truths in mind help you to keep hold of faith and joy during the hard times in your life?
- Pastor Dave spoke of three traditions in the church -- the Word, the Spirit, and the Incarnation. Like with Mary, the Spirit enters into us to form Christ within us. How have you seen Christ formed in you? In what ways do you still long to see Christ more fully formed in you?
