The soldiers saw that Jesus was clearly already dead. Just to be sure, a soldier pierced Jesus' side with a spear. Such detail might seem unnecessary but both then and now, there have been those who have doubted Jesus' death. In addition to these details, John testifies that he saw it with his own eyes. The clarity of Jesus' death is a kindness for those whose hope is in the ensuing resurrection!

For Reflection:
On that Good Friday, John likely did not imagine that there would be people who would doubt the death of Jesus. But by the time he wrote the Gospel of John, numerous groups had raised that very question.
- What people or groups of people do you imagine might doubt the death of Jesus? It might seem easier to doubt that Jesus came back from the dead than to doubt his death in the first place, so why doubt his death?
- What does Jesus' death mean to you?
