Description

The feeding of the 5,000 must have seemed like a high point of success to the disciples. The crowds were even ready to make Jesus king! But now these new disciples leave Jesus in droves. At what must have felt like a deep low to the disciples, Jesus asks, "Are you also going to leave?" Following Jesus can be both difficult and confusing, especially when those around us walk away from Jesus. How did Jesus' closest disciples find the strength to carry on? At the very least, by acknowledging that only Jesus has the words that give eternal life!

For Reflection:

Imagine you were there to see Jesus' ministry magnified by seekers near and far. Then imagine most or all of them leaving -- disappointed, confused, or even angry.

- How might this exit by so many have affected your faith? Perhaps imagine many people leaving your church, or leaving "the Church" in your nation or the world? How might that shifting tide affect your faith?

- What keeps you following Jesus when it becomes difficult, or confusing, or when others walk away? Is your answer similar to Peter's (v68)?
