The continuing place of Israel in God's plan might seem like an academic discussion but for Paul, it was deeply personal. He brings up the story of Elijah, who at one point thought he was the only person left who had not abandoned the God of Israel for other gods. But God was with Elijah, along with several thousand others who had remained faithful. Paul likely felt similarly at times. But no matter how alone we might feel at any given moment, we are not alone. God is with us, and so are many others!

For Reflection:
Paul's reference to Elijah is found in 1 Kings 19. Elijah felt so alone and depressed that he was barely able to continue on.
- Have you ever felt alone in following God in your family or your community? Have you ever felt like being faithful to God led to a place of hopelessness? What happened? What, if anything, helped bring you out of that pit of despair?
- Elijah was reminded that he was not alone. Elijah's story was likely a reminder to Paul that he was not alone. What or who can help remind you that you are not alone?
