Description

In this episode, Kayla Edwards, Miss Alabama State University, discusses her experience as a pageant queen, the impact of HBCUs and Greek organizations, and her work with health organizations focused on Sickle Cell disease like the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

Kayla shares her journey of how a Brooklynite chooses a university like Alabama State University even though she had no familiarity with HBCUs altogether; she has a special shout-out to the “HoneyBeez” who unbeknownst to them, were part of her decision making. In her signature genteel demeanor, Kayla also emphasizes the importance of being adventurous and seeking opportunities outside of one's comfort zone as well as the significance of voting and women's rights.

Just as impactful as her service in the different causes that she is committed to, voting and women’s rights are two crucial issues that Kayla believes her generation must pay attention to and engage in. She believes that the voices of Black college students especially must be heard outside of their known and expected spaces. Tune in to also hear why Kayla believes Greek organizations and Pageant Queens play a significant role in HBCU culture.
