Andy served in the Royal Marines from 1976 to 1996, starting as a recruit and later becoming an officer. He excelled in his training, earning distinctions such as King’s Badgeman and the Royal Marines Sword of Honour Young Officer Batch. Andy was recognized for his field work in Northern Ireland with a General Officer Commanding’s Commendation while serving with 40 Commando Royal Marines.
During the intense ground fighting of the 1982 Falklands conflict, Andy commanded a rifle troop of 32 men from 45 Commando Royal Marines, operating independently in no man’s land. In a critical engagement, he ambushed a friendly patrol by accident from his own unit, resulting in the unintentional loss of four lives.
