One day I just saw her lying on the ground.
I’d fixated on my sisters’ mastery of her workings:
Axles, crank, gears, big wheels…messaged and fashioned
For the solitary purpose (by some unknown genius),
Of manufacturing propulsion for forward motion.

Only 4 years old yet hyped on bennies of “can do” thinking…
Osmosis off upper ranks of Rockwood family roles
Then magnified by my drive to be a bigger boy.
Some voice in my chest spoke out to my head:
“Lay it all on the line...give her a try!”

The Big Blue Betty knew I was ready
Her lower c. of g. made her ride steady.
Fat inflated tires (to just above flat).
She rolled on…like a dream come true!
She taught me early. She taught me for life
How to maneuver over cracks and upheavals
Disappointments and strife. Always knew what to do

She was a heavy lift, getting her straight up and down;
Like my sisters, I straddle her frame, left foot on her lower treadle
Bounce up to the other, like walking up steps,
While, at the same time, grabbing on to her bars.
Immediately she begins to roll (being pre-destined to the goal).
Vs 4
At the captain’s post: standing up to my task
One giant stride after another: like stilt man at the circus.
We’re rolling, it seems she’s a mind of her own.
A bit surprised, at first, I quickly plot my course.
A 5-senses experience with neurons alighting all at once.
