In this episode of Under the Docs, Uncle Sean and Paranoid American take a deep dive into the 2025 Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbor, directed by Geeta Gandbhir.
The film examines the June 2023 killing of Ajike “AJ” Owens in Ocala, Florida, and the neighborhood conflict that escalated into a deadly confrontation. Told largely through police body-camera footage, 911 audio, and interviews, the documentary puts viewers directly into the events surrounding the tragedy.
We’ll break down the escalating dispute between neighbors, the role that fear, prejudice, and racial tension played in the story, and the controversial questions surrounding Florida’s Stand Your Ground laws.
Uncle Sean and Paranoid American also discuss what makes The Perfect Neighbor such an unsettling documentary — and whether the film succeeds in making its larger argument about accountability, gun violence, policing, and the consequences of allowing seemingly small neighborhood conflicts to spiral completely out of control.
This isn't just a story about what happened. It's a look at how a series of seemingly ordinary events can build toward something irreversible.
