Under the Docs 028:Architecton (2024)

Description

Why are we building boring, simplistic buildings that barely last a century when humans have been constructing structures that have stood for thousands of years?

Seriously... what happened?

Ancient civilizations built monuments, temples, and cities designed to survive generations of earthquakes, wars, weather, and the occasional really bad idea. Meanwhile, we're surrounded by buildings that sometimes seem like they're designed to make it to the end of the warranty.

Clearly, humans are capable of more. So why are we settling for less?

In this episode of Under the Docs, Paranoid American and Uncle Sean take a look at the fascinating documentary Architecton, a film that explores architecture, humanity, and our complicated relationship with the buildings we create.

The documentary asks some surprisingly big questions: What makes a building worth preserving? Why did ancient builders create structures meant to outlive them, while modern construction often seems focused on efficiency, convenience, and getting the job done as cheaply as possible?

Paranoid American and Uncle Sean dig into the ideas behind Architecton, discuss the incredible structures that have survived for thousands of years, and ask whether modern architecture has lost something along the way.

Are we actually building for the future, or are we just building for the next quarterly report?

Join Paranoid American and Uncle Sean for another episode of Under the Docs as they explore Architecton and the strange, fascinating, and sometimes frustrating world of architecture.
