Under the Docs 030:Beware the Slenderman (2016)

Description

UNDER THE DOCS SPOOKTACULAR

It's time to get spooky.

In this special Under the Docs Spooktacular episode, Paranoid American and Uncle Sean dive into the disturbing 2016 documentary Beware the Slenderman, which examines one of the strangest and most unsettling true-crime cases to emerge from internet culture.

In 2014, two 12-year-old girls, Morgan and Anissa, attempted to murder their friend Payton in an effort to prove their loyalty to the fictional internet legend Slenderman.

The girls lured their friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times, leaving her for dead. Somehow, Payton survived the attack and was eventually discovered by a passing cyclist, who helped save her life.

But the story doesn't end with the attack.

Paranoid American and Uncle Sean dig into the documentary and the disturbing questions surrounding the case. How did a fictional character born on the internet become so real to two young girls that they were willing to kill for him? Where does childhood imagination end and dangerous belief begin? And what happens when the darkest corners of internet culture make their way into the real world?

Beware the Slenderman takes us deep into the case, the families involved, the psychology behind what happened, and the bizarre online mythology that surrounded it.

For Paranoid American and Uncle Sean, this is exactly the kind of strange, unsettling story that belongs in the Under the Docs Spooktacular.

So turn down the lights, lock the doors, and maybe don't go wandering into the woods tonight.

Join Paranoid American and Uncle Sean for another Under the Docs deep dive into documentaries, true stories, mysteries, strange events, and the darker corners of the world around us.
