July is National Black Mental Health Awareness Month. And as is the case with almost every issue, topic and challenge in America, African Americans are impacted by mental illness in disparate ways. While the experience of being Black in America varies tremendously, there are shared cultural factors that play a role in helping define mental health and supporting well-being, resiliency, and healing.
Thank you for hanging out with me and my colleague Dr. Rashida W. Brown PhD for S2 E26 of the Lotus Flower Podcast as we have an in-depth discussion on how to thrive even when life is overwhelming.
Dr. Rashida’s passion empowered her to stand against life’s obstacles. Sequentially, she was able to “get off the couch” and step into the field of her dreams. Emphatically and with tenacious conviction, she was determined to escape a life full of past childhood trauma and relationship dysfunction. In doing so, she was blessed with a spectacular “get off the couch” life experience. Without question, it was Dr. Rashida’s passion that fueled her with the power to achieve goals that far exceeded what she could ever have imagined.
Nevertheless, I dare to say that life’s pain were also a contributing factor that gave her the confidence to go forth and heal from the physical, mental, and emotional side effects of childhood trauma. Conversely, even though Dr. Rashida’s life had been broken by the turbulence of a challenging foster care system, a traumatic childhood, and broken relationships; she positioned herself to accomplish the very thing that she was born to accomplish; becoming an international speaker, two times best-selling author and trusted a Psychotherapist. Moreover, her challenges, trauma, disappointments, and seasons of waiting all made sense as she opened her heart to allow God to do the ultimate work in her.
