Tacarra Cannon was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She currently resides in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Ms. Cannon is a Master student focusing on Healthcare Leadership at Western Governor’s University. She currently is employed as a Financial Navigator in one of Kalamazoo Michigan’s hospital cancer center settings. Ms. Cannon is a mother of a beautiful 12-year-old daughter. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from of Western Michigan University. Ms. Cannon currently attends Western Governor’s University where she is pursuing a Master’s in Healthcare Leadership.
Ms. Cannon is a delegate in the Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A Michigan Pageant. The pageant will be held on April 30th, 2022, in Detroit, Michigan. In her spare time she enjoys acting in stage plays and spending time traveling her daughter and significant other.
In her emerging role as a Financial Navigator, Tacarra realizes the crucial advocacy role she plays in helping her patients navigate the burdensome cost of their cancer treatment.

The treatment of chronic illnesses like cancer and autoimmune diseases has advanced dramatically. New treatment options, such as targeted immunotherapies, are showing great promise. But these advances come at great cost. In 2013, an estimated thirteen million people died from cancer and autoimmune diseases. By 2020, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expect this spending to reach $173-$207 billion. But these advances come at a price. In 2013, an estimated $115 billion was spent on healthcare related to cancer alone. Most of these costs are transferred to patients through higher out-of-pocket expenses, including premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. These costs affect patients' quality of life and treatment adherence. So, how can healthcare providers help patients who are experiencing high out-of-pocket costs for their prescription medications? Patients may not understand how to access these treatments without running the risk of financial ruin. So, how can healthcare providers assist patients who are paying high out-of-pocket costs for prescription medications? Patients may not be aware of how to obtain treatment without risking financial ruin. Health providers should place a high priority on reducing patient financial risk. An emerging healthcare profession, known as financial navigation, offers tremendous potential for easing financial barriers for patients seeking expensive treatments. The purpose of financial navigation is to reduce financial barriers to healthcare, which will help patients gain access to care by guiding them through our complex healthcare system.
