Reverend Dr. Karlene Fyffe Phillips

Pull up a front row seat an listen to this cutting-edge discussion as Reverend Dr. Phillips and I talk in-depth about the topic of "Responding and Coping with the Loss of a Loved One." There are time in our lives that "Life hits us and it hurts." We may look fine from on the exterior, we may dress the part, and we may put on our plastic smiles; because after all we are Christians and that's what we are supposed to. However, when we remove the makeup, take off the church clothes, unclip the weave, it will become extricability clear that life hurts. And you will have to cry sometimes no matter how much you love Jesus.

According to one of my most favorite theologians, Dr. Tony Evans, "Life does hurt. And Jesus knew it would. He said, "In this world you will have tribulation, John 16:33 ESV. He didn't say "you might" have troubles and difficulties. Jesus said you, and I will have pain, hurt, and struggles."

On our podcast today Reverend Dr. Phillips shares with from both a theological position of platitudes on pain and from a heart position. She liberally shares an array of spiritual nuggets to help you face pain and hurt. As well as, provides "lived" examples of how to respond and cope with the loss of loved ones.

As the daughter of a Preacher and an Evangelist, Rev. Phillips accepted the Lord at an early age. Through the myriad challenges of the teen years, she stayed the course due to her reliance on God’s all-sufficient grace. Her passion for ministry blossomed in high school when she initiated a daily lunch time bible study. While in high school and college she was active in the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Rev. Phillips has been honored to serve in various capacities to help spread the Gospel in schools, youth camps, nursing homes and churches, locally and abroad.

Rev. Phillips joined Beacon Light Missionary Baptist Church in 2013 and is honored to serve as an Associate Minister and Director of Christian Education. She also leads the Outreach and Prayer ministries, and currently assists Rev. Burke by leading weekly virtual Bible Study since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is grateful for the strong mentorship of her pastor, Rev. Dr. Clarence Burke and Drs. Maxwell and Long of Triangle School of Theology. Rev. Phillips supports and advances the work of the Durham community by serving on various boards and committees.

Rev. Phillips has a Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of New Rochelle and a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the City University of NY. She graduated with honors from Apex School of Theology with both a Master of Divinity and a Doctorate degree. Rev. Phillips was married to Undray Phillips, Sr., a faithful member of Beacon Light Missionary Baptist Church who went home to be with the Lord in 2019. She has a son who calls New York City home, and a daughter who resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Having served twenty-two years with Durham County Government, ten years with the world renown Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC, and earning a Doctor of Ministry degree, Karlene operates with a servant’s heart. She looks forward to continued service in the church and community as she humbly allows the Lord to direct her steps.

Her guiding passage of Scripture is 2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness.
