Description

Aphrodisias was among the most important cities of the Greco-Roman world. It was splendid, with elegant marble buildings, a school of sculpture, thriving markets and large sports and entertainment facilities. The locality, since the third century. B.C. closely linked to the cult of the goddess Aphrodite, was struck in the seventh century. A.D. by bitter religious strife, serious epidemics and devastating earthquakes.
