Peter: Flawed & Faithful (Part 4)
Matthew 26:31-35, 69-75

Brash Peter is unable to imagine just how profoundly misplaced his self-confidence is. He is sure that he stands taller than all others who claim to follow Jesus—until, that is, he does precisely the thing that he swore he would never do: he denies his teacher and Lord to save his own skin. Peter's famous failure exposes the universality of human frailty and it shows us that even our stumbles can advance God's good work in this world.

Peter's exploits in the gospel story have greater prominence than those of any other disciple, likely for two reasons. First, Peter became one of the early church's most significant leaders. And second, Peter made a ton of mistakes. In fact, it is the combination of these two things—that Peter represents both faithfulness and failure at the same time—that make him so compelling to all of us who make mistakes of our own and yet still seek to follow Jesus faithfully.
