Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, exploring the misconceptions and challenges many face when embracing spiritual principles. Reflecting on the notion that faith is a barrier, Joe discusses the importance of letting go of preconceived dogma and understanding the true essence of recovery.
“Then it says that was great news to us. For we had assumed we could not make use of spiritual principles unless we accepted many things on faith which seemed difficult to believe. That’s why we want to surrender what you think the dogma is of recovery or church. There is no requirement. For years they say the only requirement is the desire to stop drinking, but I’ve been coming for lots and lots of years and I have never met an arbiter of desire at any door. So they know requirements—that’s bullshit we say for our brochures. Come as you are. Churches are the same way. There’s people there that know. You’ll be guided to them. When people presented us with spiritual approaches, how frequently did we all say I wish I had what that man has?”
Joe’s discussion sheds light on the importance of embracing spiritual principles without the burden of dogma, offering a message of hope and the possibility of transformation through the 12-step recovery process. This session emphasizes the importance of reaching out for help and the power of the support found within recovery communities.
