In a true to life horror story, Lt. Knauer recounts in 1976 during a special burial at sea detail that the MARDET (Marine Corps Detachment) was ordered to "open fire" with rounds to sink the wooden casket that was slowly sailing away from the ship because the holds to sink it had not been done properly and the weights were not properly installed to have the casket sink on que. That situation is what caused the MARDET CO to call on his men to open fire and sink the casket....all while the wife of the deceased watched in horror. FUNNIEST SITUATION EVER.
