Thanks for tuning in to this episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast.
When a "season" or career ends we often wonder: "so, what's next?"
We are so thankful to one of our listeners for asking us to address this common and challenging situation that most if not all parents of athletes and performers face: the inevitable end of your son or daughter's high school career. As both coaches and as fathers, we have had a front row seat for this experience with our own teens and hundreds of players. It is not an easy situation to deal with and just one of many reasons why "parenting is the hardest job and there's not a close second" (our favorite parenting line of all time)!
Let's tackle this situation together moms and dads! How do we approach this emotionally challenging time where we are watching something so amazing coming to an end? How do we help our teen prepare for this ending? So many good questions to consider--here are some more to ponder:
--As parents, what are the different components of this situation that should be addressed?
--If my teen may or will receive the opportunity to play or perform beyond high school, how do we as parents discuss or prepare for such?
--What does "success" look like for my teen?
--What does my teen want?
--Is this about me or my teen?
--How do I as a parent handle "the end?"
When answering the many questions that fall into the "So, What's Next?" category, the critical fundamentals of connection and communication are KEYS to your success, moms and dads! Btw, we absolutely love how using The QOC Tool would be helpful in this situation. Listen to Episodes 14 & 15 for the deets!
Very Important Parents--we hope you have gained some helpful insights! We hope you are now poised to discuss those insights with your spouse or partner and most importantly, with your teen athlete or performer!
