Description

Nipuna Jayasekera, (b. 1990) in Sri Lanka, developed an interest in art and music from a young age. When given a cricket bat as a child, he chose instead to play it as a guitar. During childhood in Sri Lanka, Nipuna often played with tuning dials on old radios, surfing the Am/Fm frequencies. Discovering the recording functions of subsequent hi-fi systems sparked a lifelong fascination with music, sound recording, and sampling. Years later, Nipuna attended art school in Melbourne, Australia, to study media arts, although he decided to drop out in the final year. Despite leaving a formal education in Fine Arts, his interest in Media Arts, especially working with found footage and editing, remained. Subsequently, Nipuna pursued studies in Music Industry, with a focus on sound design. Nipuna's record label, ‘ERF Records,’ is dedicated to the proliferation of conceptually driven media and music. His most recent work combines interests in both experimental video art and sound design while exploring elements of post-art, philosophy, and poetry. These works often skirt the boundaries between post- & meta-irony, featuring soundtracks that range from hypnagogic ambience to powerful dramaturgic synth ballads. Nipuna’s work covers contemporary issues such as technologically mediated alienation, mental illness, consumption, and dissolution.
