Description

Brett Fessel, River Ecologist, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Natural Resource Department and Frank Dituri, Director, City of Traverse City Department of Public Services join to discuss the Boardman/OttawayRiver Ecosystem Restoration. This is a major project involving the removal of three dams and modifying the lower barrier to prevent invasive species upriver while allowing native fish to pass. The project is a collaborative effort from entities and stakeholders on the Federal, Tribal, State, and Local level.

The Boardman/Ottaway River is located in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties in Northwest Lower Michigan and includes 160 miles of river and tributary streams. There are a total of 287-square miles in the watershed, producing one-third of the water volume of Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City and draining 182,800 acres of land.
