Roger has been working as a mental training consultant for the past 20 years with many National level and Olympic teams and athletes. This has involved working with athletes in preparation for Olympic, Commonwealth and Pan Am Games as well as many world championships.
He is also a faculty member of the Department of Kinesiology at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). Roger began his teaching career at the University of Manitoba in 1992, and moved to the University of the Fraser Valley in 1995. Since moving to the UFV, Roger has been responsible for developing and teaching the sport psychology stream of courses, which is where him and I met.
Over the years, Roger’s work as a sport psychology consultant has also included work with those in the performing arts – musicians, actors and ballet.
I've personally known Roger from my years studying at UFV and he's a truly inspiring individual. I've learnt so much from our time at UFV together and he's been one of the most influential people throughout my academic career. I got to see first hand the amazing effect he's had on the teams and athletes he has worked with on and off the court.
In our conversation we talked about:
- How do we discover our greatest strengths and the power of saying YES throughout our lives
- How can we build up our mental toughness on and off the court
- How do we define excellence and how can we work towards being the best version of ourselves
- How do we avoid being mundane in our excellence, but instead work to maintain a level of excitement throughout
