Coach Yoni grew up on a small island where he lacked a certain amount of exposure and recruitment to the world of high level basketball. At age 25 he set a unique goal for a player his age to make a college team, and worked his tail off to do it. After being cut from 4 colleges, he walked on to Cap U as a redshirt the following summer. He went on to walk on to a pro team in Vancouver and played semi-pro ball as well. Despite not ever reaching his full potential on the court, he attributes the great things he's been able to achieve on and off the court to the amazing lessons he's learnt on his path, not giving up on his dream and persevering through every obstacle life threw his way.
I've had the pleasure of personally knowing Yoni throughout his playing career and his story is truly an inspirational one. A relentless quest which young hoopers would be wise to study. You may not be the tallest, or the strongest, or the most skilled player, but if you work your butt off good things will come your way.
In our conversation we delved into:
- The downfalls of our ego and what we should be motivated by instead
- The power of visualization and setting big goals
- The harm in constantly comparing ourselves to others
- The power of using the game to create a positive change around us
And much, much more!!
