Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has become the conversational 3rd rail in healthcare. Some say politics has no role in healthcare, but equity is a core human need. It is critical to our own health because chronic stress from lack or absence of equity leads to chronic inflammation.
Chronic inflammation then predisposes us to some of the leading causes of early death and lower life expectancy such as cancer and heart diseases. So it is not political, it is a determinant of our health.
The APTA of Maryland Board Of Directors voted to create a DEI committee and since its creation, chair Dr. Mike Ukoha, DPT and committee members have been heavily invested in the Maryland communities.
Over the past year, the group has done Overdose Awareness Day, National Survey for Minority Physical Therapists, Live and Grow Networking, Mentorship hosting Monthly Mentor Nights and High School Tours and Presentations.
So how do we really get serious about diversity, equity, inclusion? We have to care about society enough to effectively do something to transform it, make it better than how we met it. This committee has been doing the work, engaging members and businesses.
