Who is an academic? Traditionally an academic was seen as an old guy sitting behind a mahogany desk with an impressive bookcase and a tweed blazer. He spends his days thinking and reading and writing and giving philosophical lectures to enthralled students.
In this episode we hear from Dr Katrina Long and our co-host Associate Professor Darshini Ayton on what life as an academic is really like. They share their own stories and results from a report they coauthored with collaborators from Monash University and the University of Melbourne on a national survey of Australian early career academics. It’s not all bookcases and reading. The modern day academic is facing many hurdles and juggling a lot of balls in the air to stay in the game.
A fascinating insight into the realities of a job that is often misunderstood and misrepresented.
