In today’s selections, we focus on Christ as the fulfillment of the Law and the unique hope of salvation. We begin with Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho, Chapters 43–44, where Justin argues that the Law reached its end in Christ and urges his Jewish listeners to turn to Him for salvation. Then we hear from Augustine, Confessions, Book VII, Chapter 21, as Augustine compares the Scriptures to the writings of Plato, finding in the gospel what philosophy could never give—grace, forgiveness, and the suffering Savior. Lastly, Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, Part I, Question 51, Article 3, explores whether the bodies assumed by angels appear to be alive, concluding that they do—but only instrumentally, through the angel’s power.
