Today’s readings bring together prophetic fulfillment, bold confession, and the nature of angelic presence. In Dialogue with Trypho, Chapter 49, Justin Martyr responds to the objection that Elijah has not yet come by showing how John the Baptist fulfilled the role of Elijah in Christ’s first advent. Augustine, in Confessions, Book VIII, Chapters 2.4–5, shares the story of Victorinus, a Roman rhetorician who wrestled with pride and fear before publicly embracing Christ to the astonishment of the Church. And in Summa Theologica, Part I, Question 52, Article 3, Thomas Aquinas explores whether an angel can be in more than one place at a time, concluding that angels, though spiritual, are finite and can only be present in one place at once.
