Martha Jefferson Randolph was known for her intelligence, social grace, and important role in public life as her father Thomas Jefferson’s hostess and informal first lady during his presidency. She also managed Monticello and other family estates, helped organize Jefferson’s social and household affairs, edited his papers with family members, and raised twelve children while navigating the financial and political pressures of her era.
