Ademola contacted me some months ago to say that he might be visiting Berlin for a conference as a guest of the German foreign ministry. A few weeks ago Ademola and a group of African activists from different African nations came to Berlin and then Hamburg to meet with politicians, civil servants, lecturers and journalists. Their purpose was to discuss the legacy of German colonialism and in particular the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885.
In this episode that we recorded on November 15th, the anniversary of the start of the Berlin Conference some 141 years ago, we talk about this recent trip, the discussions and experiences and about the importance of addressing the continued false narratives. Many people in Europe and elsewhere remain ignorant to this day of the immense lasting administrative and political consequences of colonialism. Many African nations are still not free of the grip of imperialism. Where the American States were United and the countries of mainland Europe formed a Union, no such arrangement has been permitted for the continent of Africa. The idea of Pan-Africanism is over a hundred years old and it is about time it became a reality.
