When I asked Karin why, when a woman breast feeds in a public place, do some people find it discomforting? Her immediate response was that “breasts are sexualised”!
The misrepresentation of numerous natural events, important natural events, in mainstream media, movies and so on, like childbirth, like bodily fluids, like menstruation, makes it more challenging than needs be, to talk about them. As much as things have improved in many ways, the path backward is not impossible, unless guarded against by everyone. Fascist ideologies penetrating less extreme right-wing groups is an example of the potential dangers that lie ahead as these ideologies contain principles of inequality for women, ethnic minorities and diverse sexualities.
Making these topics taboo, takes away the normalisation of them from the social mind. They become things to distance society from. They become seen as dirty and unworthy. Doing so very ridiculously makes the people who do them dirty and unworthy. I have recently listened to a great book called “The Curious History of Sex” by Kate Lister, which deals amazingly with this topic and I strongly recommend it. If we are to protect the path towards equality, then we have to openly talk about topics that affect other sexes. Periods are not taboo. Childbirth is not taboo. Body fluids are not taboo. Being able to have mature and respectful conversations about these topics is the minimum requirement.
Enjoy!
