Verse 5 serves as a thesis statement, "For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His". We will see how Paul develops this idea of the Christian's union with Christ in His death and resurrection.
United in Christ's Death (v6-7)
Those united to Christ have died to their old self
Those united to Christ are no longer enslaved to sin
United in Christ's Life (v8-10)
Those united to Christ have victory over sin and death
Those united to Christ live for God
